a different kind of photo booth.

Kodak Girls is many things:

an ode to the beauty and magic of the analogue photographic process,

an opportunity to work against the the male-dominated and misogynistic culture of photography,

an interactive installation and physically demanding performance piece,

and a portrait of our diverse communities.

What is Kodak Girls?

Silver gelatin portraits are captured with a large-format analogue camera and developed on-site in a makeshift darkroom for participants to see their image. Using century-old technology, the Kodak Girls allow guests to witness the magic of the darkroom process in real-time.

Images are printed in a local darkroom after the fact; subjects receive a hand-made silver gelatin portrait in the mail a few weeks later.

KODAK GIRLS has collaborated with Ottawa events and organizations including the National Gallery of Canada Foundation, the Ottawa Art Gallery, and Pique Music and Art Festival.

Who are the Kodak Girls?

This project was developed by Ottawa artists Olivia Johnston and Jennifer Stewart. Both artists have lived and worked in Ottawa for their whole lives. First meeting in 2009 as students in the Diploma Program at the SPAO Centre, Stewart and Johnston quickly became friends and artistic collaborators, and have been producing experimental and DIY projects since then.

Olivia and Jennifer often work with other photo-based artists as collaborators in producing Kodak Girls, including Jocelyn Keays, Naomi Kronen, and Pierre Richardson.
